Love this so hard for skewering the homo-normative narrative that mainstream gay rights organizations like Human Rights Campaign (HRC ) is content to sell to politicians an public in order to achieve same-sex marriage (let’s not call it marriage equality, shall we?).

“We’re just like you” glosses over what is truly problematic with heterosexist power structures and institutions, easily ignoring the sexism, racism, and classism that riddles gay life as much as “straight life.”

And for gawd’s sake, so many are in relationships that aren’t perfectly middle-class, white, single-national, able-bodied and monogamous, and what, those folks don’t get equality too?

Bumblewhipped- a tale of 2013 so far

I made up this word bumblewhip during a game of reverse charades (if you haven’t played this game, do so. It’s pretty much what the name implies: one person guesses while the rest have to work together to mime the word or phrase). Instead of saying the answer, which was “flyswatter”, I said “bumblewhip”, which doesn’t exist, until now.

Bumblewhip, if I were to invent a definition for it, would be similar to gobsmack, but probably with a more positive connotation to it. So far this year, I would say I’ve been bumblewhipped with many blessings in my life. A few tragedies, but in general, it’s been an upswing type of year.

Some things are blessings in disguise:

- My Lolo, my grandpa, died in early February. I was originally ready to go to Spain around that time. And honestly, even after hearing the news that my last living grandparent had transcended elsewhere, I still had the urge to go on my trip, knowing that I would be absent during his memorial service. But, I did end up convincing myself to cancel my trip and stay; thankfully, the airline was able to refund my flights as well.

During my Lolo’s memorial service, I was one of the men who brought his casket inside the church. I cried when they opened the casket and I saw my lolo. A lot of my family traveled for the service: my older sister from Virginia, my cousin Jojo from Southern Illinois, and my Army cousin Armandh from North Carolina. The service went smoothly and I was able to gain peace and closure from the proceedings. I made a slideshow retrospective of my lolo for the service also and it was received honorably.

Some really cool things happened during the service. First was that Erik showed up. I was totally cool with him not showing up, but he did. And that’s a huge step in introducing him to my family. He definitely got a thousand boyfriend points for his presence there. Another were two incidents in which people felt comfortable enough to let me know that they knew I was gay and that they were ok with it. The first was my Tita Jeanne telling asking me if I was part of a gay choir. And another was my Tito Ernie asking me where my partner was (Erik left early) and inviting me to him and family’s church in Glendale because it was an inclusive, welcoming community.

And the blessing in disguise part was that because of my lolo’s death, I couldn’t go on my vacation, which gave me more time to prepare for a promotional interview. And just recently, I found out that I GOT THE FUCKIN’ PROMOTION!!!

I admit to having strayed from acknowledging a God Force in my life for several years. But minor miracles like this plus reading a book called The Artist’s Way has helped me in knowing that I have someone looking out for me in the great beyond. My Lolo probably put in a good word there.
